i am somewhat loath to be contrarian on a Shedler post, but this is advice for starting psychodynamically oriented therapy. therapy with therapists who were only ever trained to utilize manualized treatments are not like this at all. “what if i’m angry” and “is it like talking to a friend” and the advice thing stick out in particular. it would be awesome if these things were like generalizably true about therapy but i sort of feel like they ceased to be generally true about therapy in like 1995 (unfortunately, imo)
